The final diagnosis was a thrown rod bearing. The tech told me that when the beating goes, it fills the oil with metal flakes that act as an abrasive, scoring all of the rotating parts. End result? They are replacing every rotating part
Here are a few pics of the damage.
I won’t get it back for at least another week. More time to enjoy the niceties of a loaded Outback!

It’s all smiles for miles except for when it isn’t.

I’m surprised it’s not cheaper to just buy a new engine.

Dude, that sucks.New engine, can’t complain about that?
BTW I got our Outback back from the dealer on Saturday and it runs like a top with a new short block. It actually feels like it has 25% more power than it did when it was burning 1 qt oil/1500 miles. Really impressed with the service from our local dealer, although I was a little bummed to turn in the $35k Outback Limited. I still like my 6 spd manual 2013 better than the CVT with all the nanny features. -You know I can’t drive in the proper lane according to that car.

They are putting in a new long block.

Lane keeping. Apparently I am bad at it too. I’m glad to hear that it all worked out for you!

Have you had the automatic braking kick in yet? It happened once when a car turned left in front of me about 150 feet up the road. I was like WTF is wrong with this car, it just lost power and slowed down...

Auto braking caught me by surprise once. Then I started trying to set it off purposefully. :)
The only useless feature to me is the adaptive cruise control. It wants too much following distance. Every time I tried, it kept shutting down when someone changed lanes in front of me. That o found very annoying.

Ask the dealership if you can keep the pistons and con rods...make some cool furniture out of it or something.

My dealer has a 6-cylinder loaner. I’m really hoping it’s available when I inevitably need my short block replaced in a few months. Did you get the windshield wiper motor recall done while you had it in?

They did not address the wind shield wiper motor, I wonder if my car is part of the recall. It’s not like it snows or freezes in Montana or anything.
Update: I just called them and I made an appointment to have it changed out. Thanks for the reminder.

Short block in the Forester? My car drives so much better now, way more power.

Forester most likely. It’s been eating a quart more and more frequently. Last one lasted under 2,000 miles. My 2013 Outback is a CVT with just under 60k and it hasn’t had any oil burning issues.

I think the spec is about 1/3 qt per 1,000 miles, after that they will replace the short block. I’m assuming you are doing an oil consumption test? It took quite a while for them to get the test right for me (over a year), during that time they were giving me a lot of free oil.

No test yet. I need to bring it in for an oil change, tire rotation and probably differential service in the next week or two anyway so I’ll ask them to start one then.

I’ll try harder. The new engine should be broken in by the time the track day rolls around.

Warranty. It was their fault anyway. Too much oil.

Sorry I was directing that one towards Highlander, because I know it was for the Outback and Forester. Not sure the WRX is part of the recall too, but probably worth checking. Oddly I’ve already gotten both the official letter from Subaru and a reminder letter from the dealer asking me to bring it in, despite not living in a cold weather state where the problem is supposed to be more likely to show up. They probably just want to upsell me on some stupid fluid flush that I don’t need.
